Cadmium, atomic no.: 48, symbol as Cd, weight at 112.411, is a soft, bluish-white metal and is easily cut with a knife. It is similar in many respects to zinc. Interestingly, a characteristic cadmium "scream" is heard on bending a cadmium bar (such as that illustrated above). Cadmium and its compounds are highly toxic. Silver solder, which contains cadmium, should be handled with care.
it is rare that preparation of cadmium in the laboratory should be required bacause of environmental concerns about cadmium. The isolation of cadmium is associated with zinc recovery as cadmium is an impurity in zinc ores.

Standard Specifications
Cadmium Metal is a soft, malleable, ductile, toxic, bluish-white bivalent metal. It is similar in many respects to zinc but forms more complex compounds. About three-quarters of all the cadmium used is in batteries, predominantly in rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. Most of the remaining quarter is used mainly for cadmium pigments, coatings and plating, and as stabilizers for plastics.

Cadmium Oxide is prepared commercially by oxidizing cadmium vapor in air. ?Cadmium oxide in the form of thin films has been used in applications such as photodiodes, phototransistors, photovoltaic cells, transparent electrodes, liquid crystal displays, IR detectors, and anti reflection coatings. CdO microparticles undergo bandgap excitation when exposed to UV-A light and is also selective in phenol photodegradation; Cadmium oxide is used in cadmium plating baths, electrodes for storage batteries, cadmium salts, catalyst, ceramic glazes, phosphors, and nematocide. Major uses for cadmium oxide is as an ingredient for electroplating baths and in pigments.
